Gender has been at the epicentre of the culture wars in the past decade. The feminist movement has been more vocal than ever, claiming that it’s time women get the place they deserve in society. At the same time, there has been a backlash by some men and women, who claim that feminism is an ideology that is creating unnecessary divisions, rather than promoting equality. Even more, men now have their own identity politics, with the ‘manosphere’ having a visible presence online.

Having such a noisy background, how are we to understand gender in today’s society? Is gender a social construct, or is there biological reality to it? Were we better off with traditional gender roles, or were they a cover for the perpetuation of the domination of women by a patriarchy? Do women need feminism, and do men need protection from feminism?
